The certificate on the wall
When a sealing component arrives with USP <87>, USP <88>, and FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 compliance documentation, there’s a natural tendency to treat the job as done. The material is approved. The supplier provided the paperwork. Procurement is satisfied. Quality is satisfied.
And then six months later, gaskets are sticking to ferrule faces, campaigns are stopping for unplanned re-torquing, and the calibration team is replacing instruments that didn’t actually fail.
The compliance certificate didn’t lie. It just didn’t tell the whole story.
What the standards actually test
USP <87> and <88>
- Biological reactivity tests
- Assess whether a material will cause a harmful biological response in a patient when drug product has been in contact with it
- Important tests that exist for good reason, but they are patient-safety standards, not process-performance standards
FDA 21 CFR 177.2600
- Governs use of rubber articles intended for repeated use in contact with food and by extension pharmaceutical products
- Establishes baseline safety for product contact
- Does not assess process reliability or operational performance
What compliance doesn’t test
- How the material behaves under 140°C steam sterilisation repeated 300 times
- Whether plasticisers migrate out and contaminate the process fluid
- Whether the gasket sticks to stainless steel ferrule faces after thermal cycling
- Whether the material retains its mechanical properties over a 12-month service interval
- Whether it can be removed cleanly without tools or without damaging adjacent components
Compliance is the floor. It’s the entry ticket. It tells you what won’t harm a patient. It doesn’t tell you what won’t harm your process.
Where the operational pain actually comes from
The gap between regulatory minimum and actual performance is where most recurring process issues originate. Gaskets that need re-torquing every campaign. Connections that require excessive force to disassemble. Extractable content that drifts upward over time. Materials that swell, deform, or bond to metal surfaces in ways that a compliance certificate never predicted.
This isn’t a quality failure in the regulatory sense. The material is still approved. But it’s a reliability failure, and the cost lands with engineering, maintenance, and calibration teams who have no visibility of the original material selection decision.
Specifying beyond compliance
Questions worth asking
- What is the formulation, specifically, does it contain plasticisers?
- What are the carbon black and inorganic filler levels?
- What is the expected service life under our actual process conditions?
- Does the supplier offer thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data to demonstrate formulation quality?
What good looks like
- A supplier who can answer those questions confidently is offering something beyond compliance, they’re offering performance data
- That’s a very different conversation to reviewing a certificate of conformance
- Re-torquing requirements and intervals should be specified upfront, not discovered in service
The right specification question
The question to ask when specifying a sealing component isn’t just is it compliant. It’s whether the formulation will perform under your actual process conditions, whether the supplier can demonstrate that with data, and whether the expected service life matches your maintenance programme.
A supplier who can answer those questions confidently is offering something beyond compliance. That’s the conversation worth having.
