Biopharmaceuticals, also known as biologics, are medical drugs produced using biotechnology. They are proteins (including antibodies), nucleic acids (DNA, RNA, or antisense oligonucleotides) used for therapeutic or in vivo diagnostic purposes, and are produced by means other than direct extraction from a native (non-engineered) biological source.

Unlike traditional pharmaceuticals that are synthesized through chemical processes, biopharmaceuticals are derived from living organisms, including humans, animals, and microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast.

Types of Biopharmaceuticals

This category includes a wide range of products such as monoclonal antibodies, growth factors, cytokines, fusion proteins, and vaccines. Gene and cell therapies are also considered part of this group.


Production is complex, often involving recombinant DNA technology, where genes that encode for a specific therapeutic protein are inserted into a production cell. The cells are then cultured in bioreactors and the protein is harvested and purified.


Used to treat various diseases and conditions, including cancers, autoimmune diseases, and genetic disorders. They can be more targeted in their mechanism of action compared to traditional pharmaceuticals.

Regulatory Considerations

The development and approval of biopharmaceuticals are highly regulated, given their complexity and biological basis. Regulatory agencies such as the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) or EMA (European Medicines Agency) have specific pathways and guidelines for biologics.


One of the main challenges in biopharmaceutical development is ensuring consistency and stability in the production process, as the products are derived from living cells. They are also typically more expensive to produce than chemical drugs.


These are biopharmaceuticals that are similar to an already FDA-approved biologic, known as a reference product. Unlike generic drugs, biosimilars are not identical to their reference products due to the inherent variability of biological production.
