The Night Percy Shaw Nearly Died | Pure Transfer

This is a great story, that’s had an effect on everyone’s lives, including yours. On a foggy night in 1934, Percy Shaw was driving home along the Queensbury Road in West Yorkshire when he very nearly drove off the edge of a steep embankment.

What stopped him – what he later said saved his life – was a cat sitting on a fence at the road’s edge. Its eyes caught his headlights. The reflection was enough to jolt him back onto the road.

Shaw went home and spent the next two years building a device that would do what the cat’s eyes had done – but reliably, permanently, in every weather condition, for every driver, on every road. He called it, appropriately, the cat’s eye. By 1947 they were being fitted to roads across Britain. By the 1960s they were standard across the world.

The remarkable thing about Shaw’s invention is how simple it was. The road itself hadn’t changed. The cars hadn’t changed. The fog hadn’t changed. All Shaw did was give drivers a reliable visual reference point in conditions where one had previously been absent.

The truth is, a process facility in a pharmaceutical or high purity environment has more in common with Percy Shaw’s foggy road than you might initially think.

The equipment is technically sound. The specifications are documented. The people operating the system are trained and qualified. But in the moment – under time pressure, during a shift change, in the controlled chaos of a maintenance window – the practical readability of what is physically in front of a technician can be remarkably low.

Every fitting is stainless steel. Every clamp looks the same. Size differences can be subtle to the eye. Pressure ratings are not visible. Application classifications are not marked. The information exists in documents and systems, but at the point of physical interaction – at the connection itself – there’s nothing to guide the hand reaching for it.

Shaw’s cat’s eyes didn’t illuminate the road. They reflected what was already there – the driver’s own headlights – back to them at precisely the moment and angle they needed it.

A colour-coded fitting system does something remarkably similar. It doesn’t add new information to the system. The size, the rating, the application – all of that already exists somewhere. What colour coding does is reflect that information back to the person who needs it, at the point they need it, without requiring them to look anywhere else.

It is a passive system. It requires no power, no connectivity, no maintenance of its own. It simply makes the road visible in the fog.

Shaw didn’t make driving safer by changing the road. He made it safer by ensuring drivers could see where they were going. A colour-coded process line does exactly the same thing.

Percy Shaw became a millionaire from his cat’s eyes. He lived in the same modest house in Boothtown for the rest of his life, kept the curtains open because he liked the light, and reportedly never went anywhere he wasn’t sure of the road. Percy understood, better than most, that the difference between a safe journey and a catastrophic one is often just a matter of being able to see clearly.

On a process line handling pharmaceutical products, sterile fluids, or high purity transfers, the stakes are different in kind but not in principle. The ability to read the system clearly – to see what is in front of you without ambiguity – isn’t a luxury, it’s a safety requirement. Thanks Percy!
