The Short Route

Why pre-validated assemblies cost less than you think.

Chris Wignall - Job Role

The Short Route | The Reliability Files | Pure Transfer Ltd

The conversation that keeps happening

In almost every facility where we discuss pre-validated pharma hose assemblies, the initial response follows a predictable pattern. Someone in the room, usually procurement, sometimes engineering, does a quick mental comparison of materials cost. Tubing plus fittings versus a pre-built, validated assembly. The tubing and fittings are cheaper. The conversation moves on.

What doesn’t get counted in that mental comparison is everything that turns raw tubing into a qualified, audit-ready, deployable assembly. And that gap, between materials cost and total cost, is where the real number lives.

What building it yourself actually involves

Sourcing and Incoming

  • Multiple suppliers with varying specifications and no single point of accountability
  • Incoming inspection required for each batch
  • Component qualification for clamps, ferrules, and end fittings separately

Build and Labour

  • Cleanroom environment and trained technicians required
  • Documented build process with tooling records
  • Time and labour your facility is paying for at full cost

Validation

  • IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, typically months of engineering resource
  • Multiple review cycles and quality sign-off
  • Every deviation, every substitution, every component change requires a documented process

Documentation

  • Full change control, batch records, traceability from raw material to installed assembly
  • Writing and maintaining documentation is ongoing overhead
  • Every site in your network runs this process independently with no shared benefit

Per-site Repetition

  • Every facility starts from zero
  • No shared benefit from validation work done elsewhere
  • The same process, the same cost, the same risk, every time

The Real Comparison

  • Materials cost is lower, total cost is not
  • The engineering time saved on validation authoring alone typically covers the price difference within the first project
  • Quality time saved across multiple sites makes the case even more clearly

Pre-validated assemblies don’t eliminate the validation work. They move it. Your engineers review instead of write. Your quality team approves instead of builds. Your sites receive instead of start from zero.

Where the value actually sits

A pre-validated assembly arrives with a defined specification covering every component in the assembly, an IQ/OQ documentation package your team reviews and approves rather than authors from scratch, full material traceability and batch records that are audit-ready by default, and a consistent specification deployable across every site in your network without re-qualification.

The engineering time saved on validation authoring alone typically covers the price difference within the first project. The quality time saved on documentation review across multiple sites makes the case even more clearly.

The audit question

There is one more dimension that rarely gets discussed in the initial cost comparison.

When an inspector asks about a hose assembly, what it’s made of, how it was qualified, what the change history is, what does your documentation trail look like?

A pre-validated assembly has a clean, complete answer to that question built in. An in-house built assembly has an answer that depends on how rigorously the internal process was followed, by whom, and how recently.

The short route is not a shortcut. It’s just an honest accounting of where the work actually needs to happen, and who is best placed to do it.
